Platform

Add the last seven characters of your VIN in the order notes, with the engine code if you have it, and we check the part against the build record before dispatch.

A brake part: sliders, boots and grease, which is the twenty minute service that prevents the remanufactured caliper above.

We are an independent parts supplier. We are not Volkswagen, Audi, Seat or Skoda, and we are not appointed by any of them. Those are their trademarks and what we sell are parts that fit their cars. The useful thing about this group is that four badges share platforms and share parts, so the same component fits a Golf, an A3, a Leon and an Octavia and costs four different amounts at four different counters. We list it once, at one price, and tell you which platform it belongs to.

Specification and fitment

  • Fits: Golf Mk5 Mk6 Mk7 Mk8, Passat B6 B7 B8, A3 8P 8V 8Y, A4 B8 B9, Leon 1P 5F KL, Octavia 1Z 5E NX, and the other group cars on the same platforms
  • Platform: chosen above. This part is shared across the group. The Volkswagen, the Audi, the Seat and the Skoda all take it, it is the same component in four different boxes, and the price here is the same whichever badge is on your car. Choose your badge above for your records, not because it changes anything.
  • Engine: not engine dependent, but the brake specification is: the same platform with a 2.0 TDI has larger discs than with a 1.0 TSI. This group changes specification mid production and does it on a platform basis rather than a model year basis, so two cars registered the same week can take different parts. Send us the VIN with the order and we check the part against the build data before anything is dispatched. It takes two minutes and it is the difference between a part that fits and a return.
  • Production dates: 2003 to 2022 depending on platform
  • Quality: made by the firm that supplies the group, in that firm's own box rather than a dealer box. Same casting, same line, and on a group that shares parts across four brands this is where the saving actually is
  • Part number: cross referenced to the group part number for your VIN and confirmed before dispatch. We do not print one number against a listing that covers several supersessions, because on this group the supersessions are the whole point
  • The failure this addresses: a long pedal, a judder under braking, a disc past its minimum thickness which is cast into the hub, a wear sensor that has triggered, or an ABS light that is a fifty eight pound sensor rather than a module
  • Labour time: one to three hours an axle, plus half an hour to bleed properly
  • Coding: the electronic parking brake is retracted with a diagnostic tool before a rear caliper is opened. Winding it back by hand destroys the actuator
  • Also needed: brake fluid, single use carrier bolts, a new wear sensor and copper grease for the sliders
  • Torque: caliper carrier bolts are stretch bolts on most of these and are single use
  • Interval: brake fluid every two years, because it absorbs water and the boiling point falls
  • Weight: approximately 0.4 kilograms
  • Warranty: two years or 24,000 miles, whichever comes first
  • Cross drilled discs: we do not recommend them on a road car. Drilling cast iron creates stress risers and they crack around the holes. Grooved gives the same benefit without it
  • Bedding in: 200 miles of moderate use, no hard stops, and no sitting on the pedal at a light with hot discs. Uneven pad transfer is what a judder is
  • Electronic parking brake: retract it with a diagnostic tool. Winding it back by hand is a ten second mistake and a two hundred and forty eight pound one
  • Platform parts: the disc that fits a Golf fits the Octavia on the same platform with the same engine

What arrives

  • the part or pair as described
  • wear sensors where the set includes them
  • single use carrier bolts and caliper hardware
  • copper grease and a bedding in card

Fitting

One to three hours an axle. Retract the electronic parking brake with a diagnostic tool before opening a rear caliper, bleed the system properly rather than topping it up, and bed the pads in over the first two hundred miles.

Which version to buy

Pads matter more than discs and nobody sells them that way. Match the compound to how the car is used, buy grooved rather than cross drilled, and buy OE supplier discs rather than the cheapest, because disc metallurgy is where the budget end of this market saves its money and warping is what you get for it.

Checked against your VIN

Add the last seven characters of your VIN in the order notes, with the engine code if you have it, and we confirm the part before dispatch. How it works

The whole job

Where a water pump, tensioner or single use bolt must be replaced at the same time, it is in the kit and the listing says so.
