Torque Angle Gauge

A tool worth owning: almost every critical bolt on this group is torqued then turned through an angle, and doing the angle by eye is how a correct repair fails anyway.

• The failure this addresses: the job you could not finish because the right tool was not on the shelf, which with a car on axle stands is the expensive kind of not having something

• Torque: the angle gauge is what makes a published torque figure meaningful on a single use stretch bolt, and almost every critical bolt on this group is one
• Interval: not applicable to a tool. The fluids follow the schedule in the handbook, and the schedule is worth arguing with. The group's long life servicing regime stretches the oil interval on the basis of how the car has been driven. It suits a motorway car and it is actively bad for a car doing short cold journeys, which is most cars. A great many tired engines in this group are tired because they were serviced to the long life schedule in town. Switching to the fixed schedule costs one extra oil change every two years and it is the cheapest thing you can do for one of these engines.

• Why we sell tools: a timing belt on one of these is genuinely within reach of a confident home mechanic and genuinely impossible without the locking tools
• Oil approvals: this group runs a long list and they are not interchangeable. A diesel with a particulate filter needs a low ash oil
• The two jobs worth taking in house: DSG fluid and Haldex fluid. Both tools are on this page and both jobs are sent away by most workshops
• Electronic parking brake: a wind back tool will not do it and forcing it costs an actuator

Which version to buy

This page exists because the two highest value preventive jobs on this group, the DSG fluid and the Haldex fluid, are sent away by most workshops and are entirely doable with the adaptors on this page. The oils are not interchangeable and the approval number is in the title of each.
